Today I'm going to talk to you about good sources of vitamin D. Now the best source of vitamin D is the sunlight. If you can get out at noon when the Sun is the highest point for 15 to 20 minutes with as little clothes on as possible you will make a really healthy amount of vitamin D from the Sun. Now the key here is that vitamin D actually comes from or part of the process here is cholesterol is involved. So healthy cholesterol levels good sun equals good vitamin D. Now the dietary sources here vitamin D is only found in animal foods.
So particularly the fat because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. So you can get it in organ meats you can get it in butterfat, you can get it in animals who are eating what they're designed to eat green grass. What, not that deep dark colour that deep dark bright egg yolk that you can get or even the butter that's got a nice orange colour that hasn't had things added to it can be beautiful sources of vitamin D. That's what I have to say about where to get your vitamin D.
Are you getting enough vitamin D?
It's called the sunshine vitamin for a reason. Our bodies synthesize vitamin D from sun exposure during the summer months. But because of our northern latitude, and the potential health risks of sun exposure, we need to rely on other sources. Currently, about one in ten Canadians aren't getting enough of this nutrient. That's about three million people in this country alone, and that's not good, considering its health benefits. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, so this is beneficial in terms of bone health and the health of our teeth.
It can also help prevent osteoporosis and infections. And right now there's a lot of research looking at vitamin D and reducing the risk of chronic diseases, such as MS and cancer. That's why it's important to get vitamin D from other sources. Health Canada currently recommends supplementation, generally 600 international units per day for most adults and children over one year, 400 international units for children under one year, and 800 international units for adults over 70. But Maniatis says, you can also eat and drink your vitamin D. You can get vitamin D from food sources like milk, egg yolks and fish.
And there's also vitamin D fortification in a lot of food products like fortified orange juice or fortified soy beverages as well. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel are great sources, and one serving will provide you with about half of your recommended daily intake. Small amounts of vitamin D are also found in beef liver and cheese. You can always check out Dietitians of Canada and Health Canada for some tables that will list specific food items and their vitamin D content as well. While some vitamin D is good, don't overdo it. Too much can negatively affect your heart, tissues and kidneys. And remember that many multivitamins also contain vitamin D and every bit counts towards your daily intake.
Should Children Take Vitamin D
I've just had a really good idea but bear with me. So let's carry on. So the Department of Health recommends that all children aged 6 months to 5 years are given vitamin supplements containing vitamin A, C and D. Research showed that most parents were unaware that they needed to give vitamin supplements to their children, because they thought a healthy diet was enough and that is meant to be fruit and veg. Interestingly only 30% of parents were advised by a healthcare professional on this. So if there are any health care professionals watching come in. If there are any health care professionals reading this; we need to do more and advise more.
So why do we actually need to give these vitamins to children aged 6 months to 5 years? Well, it's a good question and I'm going to try my best to answer it for you. Now ok well firstly it can be quite difficult to give children a varied diet as they're growing up. Sometimes they won't get enough vitamin A, C or D. It's also quite difficult to get enough vitamin D from food alone and these vitamins are essential for good health such as growing healthy bones and building a strong immune system.
If you're now wondering which vitamin drops you should buy; well don't worry too much all it needs to contain is vitamin A, C and D and to make life easier. The NHS actually made their own vitamin drop and it's got a great name called healthy start vitamin drop. Here's some even better news you could actually be eligible to get this vitamin drops for free by applying for them on the NHS healthy start website. If you're not eligible you can still buy these drops or other brands from your local pharmacy.
Once you've got it to give it as directed on the packaging children can be a little fussy with these kinds of things. So you can either give it straight and the Healthy Start one tastes it tastes like bananas or you can mix it with food milk or any juice. But make sure they eat all of it or drink all of it to get the full dose and now that that's done here's some information. You may find useful if you're breastfeeding. It's also recommended that babies are given a vitamin D supplement from birth. So if you're not doing this already speak to your midwife about it. But if you are using infant formula and your baby's feeding more than 500mls a day then you don't need to give any vitamin supplements. It's all already in there and lastly, it's still important for children to eat healthily. So they can get all the nutrients. They need to grow and develop properly.
